Question 2

Where do you work?

Accepted Answer

We are based at KK 393 Street, Kigali, Rwanda, and our programs run in Rwanda. Today that means 5 partner schools, 10 reading clubs and a library in Kagarama, Kicukiro District.

Question 3

What programs do you run?

Accepted Answer

We run 5 programs: SOMA Literacy Initiative, Learn Through Play, Kidzone Library, Books on Wheels, Youth & Women Economic Empowerment. Each one has its own page describing who it is for and what happens in it.

The SOMA Literacy Initiative runs weekly reading clubs inside partner primary schools for children aged 5–12. Clubs follow our RECAP model: Read, Engage, Connect, Play.

Question 5

How can my school get a reading club?

Accepted Answer

We bring the books, the facilitators and the teacher training. The school brings the room and the children. Send us a message and we will come back to you with the next step.

Question 6

Where is the Kidzone Library and what languages are the books in?

Accepted Answer

Kidzone Library is a hybrid library in Kagarama, Kicukiro District, on KK 393 Street. It has more than 5,000 books in English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili, and a dedicated play area. Children browse and borrow freely.

Question 7

How does Books on Wheels work, and what does it cost?

Accepted Answer

Books on Wheels is a monthly home-delivery book subscription. Each subscribed learner aged 3–13 receives up to six storybooks a month, in the language or languages of their choice. The monthly plan is RWF 15,000 per month, per child, and there are 3-, 6- and 12-month plans that cost less per month. Subscriptions are made through lib.kidzone.rw.

Question 8

What is Learn Through Play?

Accepted Answer

Learn Through Play uses puzzles, chess and card games to build focus, strategy and problem-solving alongside reading. It runs alongside every reading club, so a session that starts with a story often ends with a game.

Question 9

What do the savings groups do?

Accepted Answer

Our Youth & Women Economic Empowerment program supports four community savings groups in rural communities. Members pool resources, save together and take part in income-generating activities such as farming and other local enterprises, and receive financial literacy training.

Question 10

How can I donate?

Accepted Answer

Tell us how you would like to give and we will come back to you with the next step. You can message us through the form, or email or call us using the details on the Get Involved page.

Question 11

Where does my support go?

Accepted Answer

Into the three things that keep a club running: books, which are bought, catalogued and rotated between clubs; clubs, which cover facilitator transport, printed activity sheets and games; and reach, which keeps storybooks moving to families. We will send you the detail for any program if you ask.

Question 12

Can I donate books, puzzles or games?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We welcome storybooks, puzzles, chess sets and card games for our libraries and clubs. Storybooks in English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili are all welcome.

Question 13

How can I volunteer?

Accepted Answer

Join our youth literacy champions and help run reading activities in communities. Reading clubs run on people, and a few hours a week can help a child through their first book.

Accepted Answer

Yes. Partners help us expand reading clubs, strengthen teacher training and reach more communities. Bound for Change, Soma Natwe Initiative, Barnabe Foundation, YALI Rwanda Chapter and Edified Generation Rwanda already work with us.
